It looks like Phil Jackson won’t be back afterall.
After a weekend filled with rumors about who will be the next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, the team has agreed to a three year contract with Mike D’Antoni to coach the team, with an option of a forth year if the organization likes the job he’s doing. The contract is worth $12 million.
Part of the reason the Lakers chose D’Antoni over future hall of fame coach Phil Jackson is in part because of his relationship with point guard Steve Nash who he coached in his stint with the Phoenix Suns.
Other rumors suggest that Jackson wanted too much power in his quest for a third stint as head coach. According to the Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Jackson wanted “significant allowances on travel, coaching duties and an ability to veto player personnel moves that didn’t fit his vision.”
The team is set to introduce the new coach in a news conference Tuesday or Wednesday.
