The summer is quickly drawing to an end and with that comes the frenzy that is the Fantasy Football Draft. Below are some of my top picks and my second choices. Before you criticize, check my logic and chime in with your own picks or variations
Quarterback: Aaron Rodgers – Green Bay Packers
Rodgers threw for 4,643 yards, with 45 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions in 2011. The reigning MVP will look to avenge the Packers early exit from the 2011 postseason. If you are looking to make a run at a Fantasy championship, who better to start with than Aaron Rodgers.
*Second Choice: Cam Newton
Running Back: LeSean McCoy – Philadelphia Eagles
LeSean McCoy was responsible for a majority of the Eagles offense last season with 1,624 total yards and 20 total touchdowns. The Eagles did not make any significant upgrades to their receiving core this offseason. Look for McCoy to carry the load once again this year.
*Second Choice: Ray Rice
Wide Receiver: Calvin Johnson – Detroit Lions
Coming off of a monster 2011 season, look for Calvin Johnson to dominate once again. At 6’5, 236lbs, proves to be a matchup nightmare for defensive coordinators. Johnson recorded 96 receptions with 1,681 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2011.
*Second Choice: Victor Cruz
Tight End: Rob Gronkowski – New England Patriots
While most would think of Jimmy Graham when picking a tight end, keep in mind that Sean Payton, the Saints Head Coach and Offensive Play Caller, was suspended for the 2012 season which could affect the Saints offense and Graham’s performance. A sure bet would be New England Patriots Tight End Rob Gronkowski. “The Gronk” had a breakout year in 2011 with 90 receptions, 1,327 yards and 17 touchdowns. Besides Wes Welker, Gronkowski has become Tom Brady’s favorite target. At 6’6, 265 with reliable hands look for Gronkowski to have another solid season.
*Second Choice: Jimmy Graham
Kicker: David Akers-San Francisco 49ers
After a solid season in 2011, look for the ageless David Akers to have another strong year in 2012. With the 49ers ground and pound offense as well as their strong defense, expect to see low scoring games with plenty of field goal attempts. Akers made 44 out of 52 field goals last season and proves to be a reliable pick.
*Second Choice: Sebastian Janikowski
Defense: San Francisco 49ers
With the exception of Aldon Smith who recently suffered a hip pointer injury, Patrick Willis & co are back for what many are predicting to be a Super Bowl year. The 49ers defensive was ranked #1 in takeaways in 2011 and will look to avenge their NFC Championship game loss to the New York Giants.
*Second Choice: Baltimore Ravens
