"I miss Mr. Magic." -- Nas ("Halftime", 1994)
On October 2nd, 2009, hip-hop once again suffered the loss of a pioneer. John "Mr. Magic" Rivas is responsible for bringing hip-hop to your radio dial. In 1983, Mr. Magic launched the first all-hip-hop show on a major radio station, WBLS-FM in NYC. For six years, Mr. Magic was known for stirring up controversy and, most importantly, giving many hip-hop legends their first radio spins.
Mr. Magic co-hosted the "Rap Attack" show twice a week with Marley Marl on WBLS. The show helped bring the Juice Crew from Queens, a collective of artists that included Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Kool G Rap, Roxanne Shante, MC Shan, Craig G and Master Ace, to prominence. The "Rap Attack" show was so innovative that tapes of the show became coveted items across the country.
In 1988, he was forever immortalized on Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back LP when the group sampled a broadcast of Mr. Magic interrupting Public Enemy's debut single on air and declaring "I guarantee you, no more music by the suckers!"
In the 1990s, Mr. Magic joined the HOT 97 team bringing along Mister Cee for the Sunday night "Classic Showcase" show airing from 7pm to 9pm.
Read Jay Smooth's 1995 interview with Mr. Magic & Mister Cee!
"There's no HOT 97 without Mr. Magic. Period." - Mister Cee
"Mr Magic was one of the first to play a Special Ed record. Period." -- Special Ed
"I may be one of the few people who can say I got my record deal from a Mr. Magic rap contest. R.I.P." - Daddy-O (from Stetsasonic)
"My New York cousins would send me Rap Attack tapes from NYC always putting me up on stuff that Philly wasn't down with... During his hey day he was loved, hated, debated (as all hip-hop pioneers are) and now today MR. MAGIC IS CELEBRATED.--- I do kinda hope that Pete Rock will stick to his word and digitize ALL of his Magic shows now. I need that in my life, son. " - ?uestlove
"Persistance overcomes resistance." - Super Rockin' Mr. Magic.

This is in response to scientific's comment,
Mr. Magic know who his friends are. The funeral was set for 10am..some people cannot get off of work or get around their other commitments. I went to the wake on wednesday, and I have to say that there was a lot of people there. All the faces that needed to be there was there. No doubt, I agree with you that certain people should have broken their backs to be there no matter what, but if they did not want to be there, the best thing for them to do was to not come. Magic was a real man in his life, he only needed his real friends at is funeral. I know he was looking down from heaven, smiling and crying, happy st all the wonderful things people had to say about him at his wake. He was definitely loved by many people including myself. I personally wanted to attend the funeral but I was unable to get out of my committments. I showed my face and payed my respect at the wake. I went to him, I prayed for him, I gave him one last kiss to send him off to our father. All you can do now is pray for him and his family. Magic will never be forgotten...never!!!!!

I remember listening to Mr. Magic at 9 years old. When he played the world premieres, we would run outside in howard projects in brooklyn to see who else heard it. Thanks for your contribution Mr. Magic. Now we all have a chance in radio. Brooklyn sends our heart felt condolences to his family. Love you Lucky

Mr Magic was our manager along wih Fly Ty. We spent hours at cold chillin records. He had mad respect when we went to different venues. Everyone knew Magic and respected anything he was a part of. Magic was old school to the core. Adidas sneakers...fade haircut and a ditty bop when he walked. He knew his music and had a great ear for talent. R.I.P my dude...
