2007 American Music Awards aired last night on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel hosted for the
fourth year in a row; however instead of doing his usually comedy shtick, due
to the writer’s guild strike, Kimmel decided to show off his pitiful dance
moves. After dragging American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and season 4 Idol
contestant Kellie Pickler, to the stage, the trio did a horrible rendition of the
Crank Dat Soulja Boy dance, with Soulja Boy there to supervise. This year for
the first time the fans got to vote for their favorite artists online and the
winners were selected on air last night. Akon walked away with Favorite Soul
and R&B Male Artist, while Rihanna, known for her pop and dance hits walked
away the winner in the female category. The artist seemed confused as to why
she was even nominated for this category and gave props to the other ladies
nominated like Alicia Keys. Speaking of the songstress, Keys had the best
performance of the night, performing her roaring hot single, No One. The stage
was decked out in a summer beach party theme, and Junior Reid came to the stage
to sing the reggae remix. Chaka Demus and Pliers also graced the stage with
throwback song, Murder She Wrote and Beenie Man, dressed from head to toe in a
white ensemble performed Girls Dem Suga. Alicia Keys also surprised fans when
she broke into some cute dance moves, which was a nice change for the star who’s
often seen behind a piano. Chris Brown’s performance was also memorable, although
it did not top his performance at the MTV Music Awards. Brown performed song Kiss Kiss with T-Pain
while pulling off his signature acrobatic dance moves, glow in the dark style. Beyonce
was presented with the International Artist Award by a stumbling Usher, who
just couldn’t seem to get his lines together. Beyonce showcased just how
versatile she is by singing a country version Irreplaceable. Other winners
included rapper T.I., who was awarded with favorite Rap/Hip Hop male artist and
album. Bone Thugs N Harmony walked away with best Duo. Justin Timberlake, who
had a big year with hit after hit, walked away with the most awards including,
favorite Soul/R&B album and favorite Pop/Rock artist. Mary J. Blige,
Rihanna and Ne-Yo and Will.i.am and Nicole Scherzinger also took the stage. British rock stars Duran Duran closed the show
performing songs chosen by fans.
