The new r&b sensation Miguel graced the stage in this year’s Grammy Awards alongside Wiz Khalifa. They performed the smash hit “Adorn” which segued into presenting an award to Carrie Underwood for Best Country Solo Performance. When it came time for “Best Pop Vocal Album”, Kelly Clarkson took the award home. In her speech she stated “"Miguel, I don't know who the hell you are, but we need to sing together,". While many people such as pink found her comment amusing, stating “"Congrats to Kelly Clarkson for the award and that loveable speech” “You made me laugh, can't wait to hear that song with Miguel." Others like Wale were not so humored. In an interview with MTV after the show, Wale stated,
“I didn’t like the Kelly Clarkson back-handed comments to Miguel. I didn’t like that at all. I just feel like our urban music is belittled, a little bit. Not trying to offend nobody on the committee, but for a record as big as ‘Adorn,’ and it to not be presented as a real performance onstage; it was almost like a segue to an award. Again, I don’t want to offend anybody on the committee, but that wasn’t a very good representation of our music because ‘Adorn’ is gonna be around for the next 30 years.”
Indeed Adorn is much more worthy than an excerpted performance. However for anyone who didn’t already know who Miguel was, they will now.
