The Nasir Jones Hip Hop Fellowship is the result of an anonymous donor who wanted Nas to be the face of the program. Nas received an email from Henry Louis Gates who asked the rapper for permission to use his name for the the fellowship which was created to help fund hip-hop related academic programs at the school.
Nas’s mother wanted him to go to North Carolina State, but he never finished high school. He always viewed hip-hop as a form of education.
"Hip-hop is important like computer science," he continued. "The world is changing. If you want to understand the youth, listen to the music. This is what's happening right underneath your nose."
