Jay-Z and his wife Beyonce recently took a trip to Cuba to celebrate their 5 year wedding anniversary but their visit to the Communist country has prompted Conservative Republicans to ask for an investigation into the trip.
Florida representatives Mario Diaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen wrote a letter to the U.S Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assests Control asking for a full investigation into whether Jay-Z or Beyonce broke any laws during their trip.
The letter reads:
We write to express concern and to request information regarding the
highly publicized trip by U.S. musicians Beyoncé Knowles-Carter
(Beyoncé) and Shawn Carter (Jay-Z) to Cuba. We would like to
respectfully request, within all applicable rules and guidelines,
information regarding the type of license that Beyoncé and Jay-Z
received, for what purpose, and who approved such travel. [...]
Cuba’s tourism industry is wholly state-controlled; therefore, U.S.
dollars spent on Cuban tourism directly fund the machinery of
oppression that brutally represses the Cuban people.
Despite the clear prohibition against tourism in Cuba, numerous press
reports described the couple’s trip as tourism, and the Castro regime
touted it as such in its propaganda.
In the 50’s, Cuba was a hot spot for Americans to visit but when Fidel Castro came into power in 1959, spending money in the country was outlawed.
However last year, Obama’s administration lifted some of the restrictions and put in a place a “people-to-people” travel program that requires all travelers to have a strict itinerary when visiting Cuba. According to some of U.S Treasury Department guidelines it states, "Each traveler must have a full-time schedule of educational exchange activities that will result in meaningful interaction between the travelers and individuals in Cuba.”
CNN reports that "Americans have been known to get around travel restrictions to Cuba in the past by stopping first in a country with flights to the island. Cuban customs officials are familiar enough with the practice to not stamp American passports when they cross their desks."
Hov and Beyonce just wanted to visit Cuba, that’s all. But I can understand why some people in the Cuban community would be upset with their trip, especially going through what they went through under the Castro regime. I’m not going to lie, when I saw pics of them visiting the country, I felt a little weird about it but that’s just me. But hey, I would like to visit their one day, I mean it was the hot spot at a point in time.
