EA’s Need for Speed series is one of video gaming’s most respected and longest running, with each new entry offering a signature formula of realism blended with an arcade-inspired twist of adrenaline-pumped action. Following in the footsteps of last year’s well-received Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Need for Speed: Carbon sets to continue the trend, while introducing a few welcome additions to stand out on its own.
Much like Need for Speed: Most Wanted, in Carbon, you roam a massive (this time even bigger) city, once again challenging other racers in a winner-takes-territory deal. The more you win, the bigger your reputation grows. New to the series are 2-part boss battles that take place in deep in the canyons, complete with dangerous twists and turns. During the first half of the race, you start off behind the opposition, with your goal being to keep as close as possible. Depending on how well you maintain close range, the more points you earn towards your total score. For the second half, the opposition follows you, and it’s your duty to stay ahead as far as you can. The person with the highest total in the end wins. You can also garner an instant win in the first half of the Canyon Duel if you manage to pass your opponent, and keep a lead for more than 10 seconds. Furthermore, if you gain a massive lead in the second half, then it’s instantly curtains for the competition, and victory is yours. Racing these battles require more skill than speed, as you can find your car part of the canyon if careless.
Speaking of cars, Need for Speed Carbon introduces a very intuitive car-customization system that allows you to actually change the depth and shape of your car’s moldings. Everything from the hood, to the rims, trunk, tires, spoiler kits, wings, lights, etc., can be molded to your liking. It will be very interesting to see how this turns out, but expect some pretty dope rides, especially against human competitors during the game’s online mode.
There is a ton more to learn about Need for Speed: Carbon, but the few details known already hint at another polished racer for the Xbox 360, come this November. Check back soon for more.
*Need for Speed: Carbon is also in development for PC, PS3, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, DS, PSP, and GBA.
