Once a month we'll showcase helpful tips and practices you can use at the crib, at school or in your commuity to help save our environment. The more you come back, the more you'll realize how every little bit does really help. Share the ideas you find here and spread the word that Going Green is the way to go! The world is worth fighting for!

COMPLEX & HOT 97 GOES GREEN
Looking for the hottest items to rock this spring?  Complex magazine selects 5 of the hottest gear for the season that will help you to look good AND reduce your carbon footprint at the same time.  Here's your guide to the Hottest Green Product on the Planet, provided by Complex magazine.

1. Green Jeans: When shopping for your next pair of jeans, why not invest in a pair of organic denim?  Here are a few of our favorites:

Parish Splat ($115):  This pair of jeans is hand-dipped using vegetable dye instead of undergoing the typical chemical process.
Levi's Capital E ECO Hesher: Levi's debuted its ECO line in 2006, aiming to offer organic product without losing style or affordability. The Hesher is from their higher-end collection, Capital E ECO, which uses recycled metal and is made entirely in the USA
Triko: This brand was found in 2001 with a stated mission to increase eco-awareness.  They use organic cotton and other accents such as tagua (a South American wild nut), coconut shells, and recycled soda cans as buttons.
2. Graphic Ts made of organic cotton:  Check out some of our favorite brands from:
Loomstate
Evidence of Evolution
Edun

3. Bellum Classics watches , a company that takes old watches and recycles them into new masterpieces.
4. Nike Trash Talk--Steve Nash's new shoe follows the Jordan XX3 as the next big "green" basketball sneaker.  It has an upper that is stitched together using scrap leather from the factory floor, a midsole created with excess ground foam from other sneaker production, and an outside that uses environmentally-preferred rubber to reduce toxins.
5) Burton Jackets--The '09 iDiom line of Burton jackets uses recycled materials to produce their pieces

Here are also a few tips to help you along the way....

1. Consider footwear and apparel made of hemp.  New Balance and adidas both released shoes made of the product.  One acre of hemp yields as much fiber as four acres of trees.
2. Instead of trashing old gadgets, trade them for PayPal cast hat ebay.eztradien.com.
3. Americans use up to 100 gallons of water daily.  Try low-flow showerheads
4. When shopping for jackets, look for those made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate) which is made of 100 percent recycled plastic soda bottles
5. Organic fibers don't have to feel like burlap.  Look for hemp silk and ingeo corn fiber.

HOT 97 encourages everyone attending Full Frontal Hip Hop on Thursday, March 20th at the Hammerstein Ballroom to bring as many old CDs and records you can find lying around gathering dust, taking up space, and otherwise going unused. We've partnered with a great company called TERRACYCLE and they're going to trade a FREE iTunes downloads for every 4 vinyl records or 8 CDs turned in.

You get FREE downloads so you can keep your music collection current. Meanwhile, Terracycle will take those unwanted CDs and vinyl records and turn them into new products, like chip bowls and Christmas tree decorations.

Just show up at Hammerstein Ballroom on Thursday, March 20th with your old CDs and vinyl. You don't even need to be attending Full Frontal Hip Hop that night. You can just come and support this great recycling opportunity. And you could win a pretty big prize for your efforts.

Look at what else you might get just for rummaging through those CDs you haven't played in... forever:

TerraCycle produces products that are made from and packaged in waste and was named the coolest company in America by INC magazine, the 1 of the 100 most innovative companies in Red Herring magazine and won the Home Depot environmental stewardship award twice.

Recycle in New York City
The New York City Department of Sanitation's Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling recently put forth a great effort in a mailing that went out to all New York City residents. If you missed it or tossed it (by mistake), we thought it was good enough to recap in this space, because all New Yorkers need to be aware of what they can recycle, how to properly recycle, develop a better understanding of what it means to recycle and make it a part of their lives. Recycling should become rote… after all, it's the law in New York City.
TIPS
*Recycle more mixed paper and cardboard. You can recycle every bit of unwanted mail and cardboard packaging. *remove your name from mailing lists to receive less unwanted mail. See more tips on www.nyc.gov/nycwasteless.

*Recycle more metal & foil, glass bottles & jars, plastic bottles & jugs, and milk & juice cartons. All household metal can be recycled, and that includes things like broken scissors and metal appliances.

*Donate more of your stuff! Check out the new NYC Stuff Exchange website: www.nyc.gov/nycstuffexchange. It's a quick and easy way to find out where to donate, buy, or sell gently used goods in NYC.

Pump Your Ride
Most people seem to notice their tires when they are flat, not realizing that an under-inflated tire uses up more gas, which is bad for the environment and bad for your wallet. Under-inflated tires reduce gas mileage because they are less round than properly inflated tires, and because of that, it requires more energy to begin moving and to maintain speed. If you don't believe us, try rolling a box.

According to AAA, driving with under-inflated tires can reduce your vehicle's gas mileage by 2-3% which, over a year, could be like wasting an entire tank of gas. So, when you think about it, checking your tire pressure should be a monthly money saving, climate saving, and foreign oil saving activity...
Breaking Tradition in Transport
We are starting to hear and see quite a bit of buzz about alternative fuels in the news, in commercials, in magazine ads, and in our leaders' speeches, but it's hard to make sense of it all. For any fuel, there are the practical questions like: can you use it in your existing car, can it be used if you modify your existing car, does it require a new car, how much does it cost, and where can you buy the fuel? Then there are the environmental and social questions like: how much does it reduce petroleum dependence, how much benefit is there for solving the climate crisis, what other pollutants does it emit, are there other environmental issues, how does it affect jobs in America, and how does it affect food supply? These are big questions that are not always easily answered...
Buses, Trains, Subway
Among our American climate heroes is the mass transit user. Public transportation riders in the US save 855 million gallons of gasoline per year, for an 8.5 million ton reduction in CO2 emissions compared to if they drove. In America's 85 largest urban areas, public transportation prevented 1.1 billion hours in time lost to traffic jams. The riders themselves can save even more -- hundreds or even thousands of dollars in driving and parking costs, and for some even the cost of an entire car. For their commitment to public transit they get precious extra time each day to read, doze, or chat with other fine commuters. Of course, public transit doesn't work for everyone, but if it's a possibility in your life, you may find that there is value for both you and the climate...
