As a former English teacher and with my passion for music and culture, I have been consuming media and writing/teaching about artists/culture. I brought artists from Chicago's Southside into my lesson plans to work with students. What drives me as a critic changed after working with the 200 students I taught. Although we enjoyed the same artists, my students and I were consuming the lyrical content differently. I developed lessons using lyrics from artists we both enjoyed. Using the required books, many of which were historical fiction, I would blend lyrics from artists of former generations and today to guide my lessons. Eventually, the students would lead a Socratic circle where they would recap the book and the lyrics we used. In my current role, I plan on creating and forwarding dialogue to a larger audience.
