As a former English teacher and with my passion for music and culture, I have been consuming media and writing/teaching my own thoughts on artists/culture. I brought artists from Chicago's Southside into my lesson plans to work with students. What drives me as a consumer changed after working with the 200 students I taught. During my first year of teaching, I began consuming media differently. I was watching/listening from my students' perspectives. My students and I enjoyed the same artists. I developed a way to blend my passion for culture with theirs, while continuing the conversation beyond nodding in agreement over an artist we both enjoy. I used lyrics from artists to create lesson plans. I would incorporate the books required by the school district, many of which were realistic fiction taking place during the civil rights movement, while blending lyrics from artists of that generation and today to guide my lessons and forward classroom discussions. In my current role, I plan on creating and forwarding dialogue to a larger audience.
