Football New York had its highs and very, very lows to say the least yesterday.
Let’s start off with the NY Giants, who were demolished by the Carolina Panthers, finishing the game scoreless, 38-0.
There was much concern over the future of Panthers Coach Ron Rivera but after coming out of a bye week and obliterating the Giants, it turns out he’s now the coach with the lesser problems.
For NYG Coach Tom Coughlin, this was his worst defeat in Giants history since becoming coach of the team almost 10 years ago. The Giants have not started the season 0-3 since 1996 and only five teams with this record went on to play in the playoffs.
It was a horrific day for Eli Manning, finishing with just 12 of 23 for 119 yards with two interceptions and being sacked 7 times.
Panthers’ QB Cam Newton on the other hand had 223 passing yards, threw three touchdowns, and also ran for 45 yards and had his first TD of the season.
But no fear Giants, the team had a similar record last year and eventually went on to win the Superbowl.
On a brighter note, the NY Jets got their second win of the season defeating their division rivals the Buffalo Bills 27-20 but of course their wins never come without some sort of controversy.
In a sloppy game with what seemed like endless penalties being committed by the Jets, it really felt like a yellow flag was thrown onto the field every other minute.
The game was the Jets for the taking and they could’ve sealed the deal early on had they not had so many penalties -- which cost them a total of 168 yards. Yes, 168 yards.
The Jets broke a record for most penalties ever in a game, being flagged 20 times, a Jets’ team record as well.
They actually would’ve had 22 penalties in total had they not declined one and another that was turned around.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time a team won with that many penalties was when the Cleveland Browns played against the Chicago Bears back in 1951.
ESPN.com broke down each penalty that was made in each quarter so you can see in black and white how many were called:

** DL Sheldon Richardson is also flagged for illegal use of hands but the Bills decline that penalty.
Wilson is flagged for a personal foul (15 yards) on the next play on a first-and-10 at the Buffalo 34.
Holmes is flagged for an illegal shift (5 yards) on a first-and-10 at the Jets’ 36.
LB Quinton Coples is flagged for defensive offside (5 yards) on a third-and-10 at the Buffalo 34.
Coples is flagged for defensive offside (5 yards) on the next play on a third-and-5 at the Buffalo 39.
Wilkerson is flagged for defensive offside (5 yards) on a third-and-4 at the 50.
WR Stephen Hill is flagged for a false start (5 yards) on a second-and-8 at the Bills’ 41.
The Jets are now 2-1 for the season, and as a Jets fan, I believe we’re all shocked but happy lol.
