According to The Washington Post, The Washington Redskins trademark over their name has been cancelled by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The USPTO considered the Redskin’s name “disparaging to Native Americans”, which gave them reason to revoke trademark protection over the Washington Redskins name. Although losing the trademark doesn’t mean the team will necessarily change their name, it does make it difficult for them to sell merchandise with their logo on it and protect their name from copyright infringement.

This is a just one development in an on-going controversy about the Washington football team’s name, which many Native Americans consider racist. U.S. senators and NFL players alike have asked Redskin’s owner Dan Snyder to change the name, according to the Washington Post.

Keep an eye out to see if Snyder changes the team name with this added pressure. WOW.
