Bunji Garlin is hailed by entertainment journalists as the greatest freestyle singer to emerge out of the Caribbean. He is also the most prolific artiste coming out of Trinidad since the revered calypso icons such as Mighty Sparrow and Calypso Rose. Over the course of his 15-year career, Bunji has garnered more than 100 hit singles in the Caribbean diaspora and the songs just keep coming.
His current single "Differentology (Ready For The Road)" is spreading like wildfire throughout clubs in the United States, Canada, UK and Europe. The avant garde soca track was the anthem for 2013’s Caribbean Carnival season and is now racking up an impressive list of awards and accolades that include:
The song was featured in the opening sequence of ABC’s hit TV drama Grey’s Anatomy, which brought new attention to this battle-tested Caribbean smash, and it was eventually entered into legendary New York radio station HOT 97’s Battle of the Beats contest, which pits two tracks against each other every night, and allows the audience to vote the winner into rotation at the station. “Differentology” was the first song to ever win the coveted title 5 nights in a row. The rotation at HOT 97 sparked mainstream interest in the track, which quickly went into rotation at stations all over the U.S., and has now crossed the Atlantic to BBC 1xtra in the UK, and Generations FM in France.
The success also caught the ears of key figures in the creative community, with acts like Major Lazer and Busta Rhymes quick to jump on remix versions of the single. The Major Lazer remix has become the go-to track of choice to open the DJ/producer group’s live sets, including a monstrous look at 2013’s Coachella Music Festival in California, where it proved to be a smash hit in front of an audience of nearly 90,000 people. The newly released music video for the ML remix was recently added into rotation at MTV, MTV2 and mtvU, while the original version video was accepted at media outlets like MTV Jams, BET, Revolt, and more.
Bunji Garlin, who is also known by his fans as the Black Spanaird and Viking of Soca (the latter given to him by fans in Denmark during his tour of Europe in 2012) has won the International Power Soca Monarch title on four occasions and also won the International Ragga Soca Monarch twice and remains undefeated. He bowed out of competitions two years ago to focus on advancing his career and also soca music.
