How Much Did Jay Z’s Collection At Barney’s Make?

I'm not a businessman, I'm a business man, Jay Z is staying true to his lyrics.

Despite the backlash from the racial profiling controversy that hit Barney’s before the release, the collection did really well.

In just two months the collection made $1 million in profits, according to the NY Daily News. Considering the collection as a whole, it is fairly expensive. Consumers balled out of control on $58,000 crocodile jackets from Rick Owens and $70 dollar Barney's tees.

The original negotiation was for only 25% of the profits was to be donated to the foundation but, after the highly controversial situation Jay-Z changed the game in business (while his wife was plotting a game changer in music). The Brooklyn mogul donated all the proceeds to his Shawn Carter Foundation.

The collaboration worked out well for everyone in the end – Hov now serves on Barney's business council and the $1 million profit is going towards providing educational opportunities to those who may not have had the chance to experience higher-learning; in addition, the Foundation is also stipulated to receive 10% of all Barney's sales of the collection on the day of its debut. It was already known that Jay-Z was a serious business man but with power moves like these how can you question it ever again?

In other Barney’s news, 2013 saw the versatility and streetwear explosion crossing over to high fashion.

Brands such as Hood By Air have pushed the boundaries and have hosted fashion shows with the street wear culture combined with high fashion.

Similar to the introduction of En Noir to the Barneys New York retail floor, Hood By Air is the next brand to pioneer their aesthetic onto the Barney's floor. Only four pieces from the brand are currently available—one T-shirt, two long sleeve tees, and a sweatshirt—you can also see what is available on Barney's website.

Although streetwear has been around for a while, it completely took over the fashion world in 2013. This higher-end streetwear company took high fashion and couture elements and flourished this past year. Alongside brands like Acne, Public School, Rag & Bone, and other labels Hood by Air currently sits on the co-op floor of Barney's.
