The Kansas City Chiefs had to play through a tough game against the Carolina Panthers yesterday in light of one of their young teammates taking his own life Saturday morning.

LB Jovan Belcher, 25, a native New Yorker who grew up in West Babylon in Long Island shot his girlfriend Kasandra M. Perkins, 22, nine times inside the home the two shared in Arizona. He then drove to Arrowhead Stadium afterwards and according to police, shot himself in front of the Chief’s GM Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel. He was said to have been thanking them for everything they’ve done while in the parking lot of the team’s practice facility before walking away and shooting himself.

It was Belcher’s mother who was also there inside the home when they incident happened, called 911 reporting that Perkins had been shot multiple times and authorities say there’s still no motive for his actions except that he and his girlfriend had been arguing recently, they have a 3 month old child together.

Belcher signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent and played with them for four years ultimately getting into the starting lineup.

This is just an extremely shocking and sad situation…no one knows what set this off or why he did it…but one thing is for sure, suicide and murder is never the way out. Now a 3 month child has to grow up without their mom and dad…

The NFL really needs to look into what affects football can have on someone’s psyche. Just last May, LB Junior Seau, committed suicide at his California home by shooting himself in the chest. Seau's family donated brain tissue from his body for research to see if head injuries he sustained while playing football might’ve played a role in his suicide. Although Seau was 43 year old and Belcher was 25, it still brings up the question of whether football does play a factor.

My condolences go out to Belcher’s and Perkin's family and friends. I'm so sorry for your loss.
