Hot Topic: Ever Been "Catfished" Like Manti T'eo? (Online Girlfriend Hoax) [AUDIO]

Notre Dame’s Manti T’eo’s stock may have plummeted even more now!

The disastrous game against Alabama in the BCS National Championship game was one thing but now it’s being reported that his supposed “girlfriend” that passed away last year was fake. Everyone felt for T’eo after news that his grandmother passed away and then just hours later his girlfriend died from leukemia.

Well Deadspin reported that this girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, never existed and it was all a hoax. Apparently Manti had an online relationship with this “girlfriend” and only spoke on the phone with her, never meeting in person. It turns out that the Lennay was a fake and created by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, a friend of Te'o's and a pastor at a church in Palmdale, California.

Manti T’eo and his family have been informed of the hoax but now it’s leaving people to question whether Manti knew about the fake girlfriend and went along with it or did he really not know at all?

I was fortunate enough to meet Manti T’eo during my E.S.P.JEN coverage of the Heisman Trophy event and I profiled him in my documentary…I honestly feel like Manti had no idea he was getting duped. This guy grew up in a Mormon Church, volunteers for charities all over Hawaii, volunteered in the special Olympics and an overall great guy. I mean this doesn’t necessarily mean he wasn’t in on it but I don’t think he intentionally lied about the death to the Fighting Irish fans or college football fans for sympathy.

Being “Catfished” is not all that uncommon, many people have been duped into believing that someone they were talking to online was really someone else.
