Netflix and Mike Tyson extended their partnership by announcing an upcoming docuseries exploring the icon’s life, created with his full cooperation.
This multi-part series will delve into Tyson’s extraordinary career and tumultuous personal life, portraying him as one of the most captivating and divisive figures in modern history.
The documentary promises to be an unflinching look at the man behind the gloves. Tyson, known for his brutal honesty, said the project will challenge him to reflect on his life with objectivity.
“Sharing my story through the lens of my growth and maturity will be both difficult and rewarding,” Tyson said in a statement. “Most people want to paint themselves as the hero, but true self-reflection means accepting the good and the bad. We have to face the person in the mirror. Netflix, with its global reach, is the ideal platform to share this story.”
The series will chronicle Tyson’s meteoric rise to fame as the self-proclaimed “Baddest Man on the Planet,” his fall from grace, and his eventual journey toward redemption. It will explore pivotal moments, including his reign as the youngest heavyweight champion, his controversial in-ring behavior, financial woes, battles with substance abuse, and time in prison. According to Netflix, the series aims to unravel the complexities of Tyson’s life, offering a balanced narrative of his triumphs and struggles.
Floyd Russ will direct and executive produce the three-part series, alongside Ian Orefice of EverWonder Studio, Jim Gray of Scratchy Productions, Michael Hughes and Greg C. Lake of DLP Media Group, and Douglas Banker of Five All In The Fifth. EverWonder, which also worked on the highly publicized Jake Paul fight, is one of the production companies behind the documentary.
The announcement comes on the heels of the Jake Paul boxing match, which shattered streaming records for Netflix and underscored the platform’s growing influence in sports media. While the fight attracted immense viewership, it also sparked controversy, with critics questioning its fairness given Tyson’s age and health. Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions dismissed allegations of a rigged fight as “baseless,” noting its plans to establish a long-term relationship with Netflix.
The Mike Tyson docuseries is the latest in Netflix’s growing lineup of sports documentaries, joining acclaimed titles such as Drive to Survive, Full Swing, and Enigma: Aaron Rodgers. As the streaming giant continues to spotlight the human stories behind iconic athletes, the Tyson series promises to captivate audiences and reignite interest in the life of a man whose legacy transcends the boxing ring.
