As wildfires continue to ravage Los Angeles and surrounding areas, the Recording Academy and MusiCares have announced the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort to support music professionals affected by the disaster. The initiative begins with a $1 million pledge, aiming to provide immediate and long-term assistance to those in need.
Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy and MusiCares, expressed his sorrow over the unfolding crisis. “The entire Grammy family is heartbroken by the devastation in Los Angeles. The music community has been hit especially hard, but we will unite as an industry to support one another. Our mission has always been to serve music people, and we hope the broader community will join us in this urgent cause.”
Laura Segura, executive director of MusiCares, emphasized the gravity of the situation. “The scale of this disaster is extraordinary, with countless individuals losing their homes and livelihoods. MusiCares is committed to providing immediate support for those displaced and longer-term aid as the full impact on the music community becomes clear. We urge everyone to contribute and help those in need during this critical time.”
The fires have destroyed over 1,000 homes in the Palisades area, with an additional 1,000 lost in Eaton. Both communities are home to many musicians, independent contractors, and music professionals. The destruction has claimed not only residences but also recording studios, instruments, and essential equipment, further jeopardizing the livelihoods of those impacted.
MusiCares’ relief efforts extend to producers, live crew members, tour bus drivers, managers, agents, A&R representatives, makeup artists, costume designers, music video creatives, and technicians—anyone whose career is tied to the music industry. Eligibility for financial aid requires proof of at least five years of employment in the music sector or six commercially released recordings or videos.
