Dwyane Wade is coming forward for the first time about a health scare that he experienced. The NBA legend revealed that almost half of his left kidney was taken out after discovering that he had a cancerous tumor.
Sharing on his The WY Network, Wade spoke about the “shocking” diagnosis he received and how he finally got a physical after putting it off. Also, he was inspired by his father Dwyane Wade Sr who was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“On the process of checking, like, ‘Why is my piss coming out slow, why is my stream ain’t powerful? Why is it a little weak?’ ” Wade explained.
A full-body scan determined that a tumor was on one of his kidneys.
“And the doctor was like, ‘You need to have kidney surgery,” he said.
After consulting several other doctors, each one agreed with the diagnosis. Wade then decided to undergo surgery on Dec. 18, 2023.
The 12-time NBA All-Star went on to say that his experience made him really appreciate the support of his family.
“My own journey to have that surgery, I think it was the first time that my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak,” he said. “That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life”
Wade added: “The moment I was by myself, I was struggling, dog.”
Nearly a month after the procedure, Wade is grateful that he had the surgery and that it was a success.
“I had a personal decision to make, and what it was was, ‘If this is cancerous if this tumor, this cyst is cancerous, on your kidney, you’re 41 years old, you probably need surgery because it’s something that needs to be removed so it doesn’t spread,” Wade says.
Wade also shared that he had to be vulnerable during his surgery and recovery.
“As a man, you never want your family to see you weak,” he says. “Don’t want to be perceived weak, don’t want to be seen in your weakest moments but I had to.”
