Denzel Washington’s path to success was foretold long before he became a Hollywood legend. In a new profile with The New York Times, the two-time Academy Award winner reflected on a prophetic moment from his early twenties that took place in his mother’s beauty salon in March 1975.

At the time, Washington had flunked out of college and was on a semester-long break to reassess his future. While sitting in the salon, he noticed a woman staring at him. “Every time I looked up, I saw this woman looking at me, and she said she was having a prophecy,” he recalled. Though she didn’t specifically mention acting, she spoke about his future impact. “I have traveled the world, and I am speaking more and more,” he added.

Washington has shared this experience before, including on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where he recounted writing down the prophecy. He later identified the woman as Ruth Green, a well-known church member with a gift for prophecy. “She says, ‘Boy, you’re going to speak to millions of people. You’re going to travel the world and you’re going to speak to millions of people,’” he remembered. Unsure of her identity at the time, he turned to his mother, who confirmed Green’s reputation for spiritual insight.

Initially, Washington believed he was meant to become a preacher, and that idea stayed with him for years. Last December, he took a significant step in his spiritual journey by getting baptized and receiving his minister’s license during a service in New York.
