Lil Nas X has never shied away from controversy, and his latest song snippet is keeping that trend alive. It’s been nearly four years since he was at the peak of his popularity, dropping his debut album MONTERO, which delivered major hits like “INDUSTRY BABY,” “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name),” “THATS WHAT I WANT,” and “SUN GOES DOWN.” Before that, he dominated the charts with “Old Town Road,” one of the longest-running No. 1 songs in history. Even follow-up tracks like “Rodeo” and “Panini” performed well.
However, his recent releases haven’t had the same impact, leading some to question whether his moment has passed.Even though his commercial success isn’t what it once was, Lil Nas X still knows how to stir the pot. This time, it’s over his upcoming track “HOTBOX” Over the weekend, he teased the song on social media, along with a behind-the-scenes look at the music video. Dressed in all pink alongside matching backup dancers and a pink Jeep, he captioned the post, “HOTBOX….OUT NEXT MONTH!!!!💗💞💕”
The track references same-sex relationships, but compared to some of his past work, it’s relatively tame. That hasn’t stopped critics from lashing out. One person wrote, “Make Masculinity Great Again.” In response to the backlash, Lil Nas X clapped back on X, saying, “Yall saying this song too gay for mainstream as if I didn’t have song with the lyrics ‘shoot a child in your mouth while im riding’ go number 1 lmaoo.”
Some are skeptical about the controversy, with replies like, “Nobody actually said that, he just wants to create drama for attention”. Others argue he’s exaggerating for PR. Whether the backlash is real or not, the song has an early 2000s Pharrell Williams-inspired beat. As for a full album, he teased Dreamboy last year. Aside from singles like “J CHRIST” and “LIGHT AGAIN!” there’s been little update.
