Prayers up!
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor who became a household name as Theo Huxtable on the groundbreaking sitcom The Cosby Show, has tragically passed away at the age of 54.
According to TMZ, Warner died on July 20 while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica after drowning in Playa Cocles, a beach in the Limón province known for its strong rip currents. His death has been officially ruled as asphyxia by drowning.
Warner first rose to fame in the 1980s as Theo, the witty and relatable teenage son of Cliff and Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show. The role earned him an Emmy nomination in 1986 and helped redefine how young Black men were portrayed on television. He went on to lead other series, including Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, and appeared in critically acclaimed shows such as The Resident, Suits, 9-1-1, and American Crime Story. He also lent his voice to the beloved animated series The Magic School Bus.
In addition to acting, Warner was a gifted poet and musician. In 2015, he won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the song “Jesus Children” alongside Robert Glasper Experiment and Lalah Hathaway.
May he rest peacefully.
