A 27-year-old gunman from Nevada has been identified as the shooter behind Monday’s mass killing in Midtown Manhattan that left six people dead—including an NYPD officer—and several others wounded during evening rush hour. The suspect, Shane Tamura, ultimately died by suicide on the 33rd floor of a Midtown skyscraper housing the NFL’s headquarters and investment firm Blackstone.
Authorities say Tamura entered the building just after 6:30 p.m. armed with an assault-style rifle. Surveillance footage captured him moving through the lobby moments before gunfire rang out across several floors. Police believe he acted alone and have not yet released a motive.
When emergency responders arrived, they found a scene of chaos. Employees had barricaded themselves behind furniture and locked office doors. Six additional victims were transported to area hospitals with gunshot wounds or related injuries. Tamura’s body was discovered after an hour-long floor-by-floor sweep of the building.
Tamura had a concealed carry permit issued in Las Vegas, valid through 2027, and a vehicle with Nevada license plates parked nearby. Investigators have confirmed the weapon used in the shooting was legally purchased. The FBI and NYPD are jointly reviewing his digital footprint and travel history to determine what led him to New York.
Little is known about Tamura’s background. Authorities say he had no prior criminal record in Nevada or New York.
His name did not appear on any federal watchlists, and no manifesto or communication has been released by investigators. He is believed to have traveled alone.
The NYPD officer who was killed has not been publicly identified. Police Commissioner Edward Caban said in a press briefing that the officer died while trying to evacuate civilians from an upper floor.
“This was a selfless act of courage,” Caban said. “He gave his life protecting others.”
Midtown Manhattan remained locked down for hours following the attack. Streets were closed, and nearby buildings were briefly evacuated as investigators combed through the tower. Authorities have begun notifying families of the victims, and grief counselors have been dispatched.
The tragedy marks one of the deadliest shootings in Manhattan in over a decade. As the city mourns, questions now turn to Tamura’s motives—and how such a deadly plan escaped notice.
