R&B star Mýa is opening up about her powerful and transformative celibacy journey, revealing how abstaining from romantic relationships helped her reconnect with herself and realign her life’s purpose.

During a recent sit-down with Judi Love, the Grammy-winning singer explained that celibacy wasn’t a conscious vow, but rather an organic shift in her lifestyle. “It wasn’t even a choice. It was just what it was, and then you look up, ‘Oh, time has passed,’” she shared.

During that time, Mýa devoted herself to personal growth, diving deep into her career, passion projects, and self-care practices. She focused on nourishing her inner joy, improving her diet, eliminating negativity, and letting go of vices that didn’t serve her well-being. To hold herself accountable, she even created a life chart, mapping out which phases and people brought her success, and which led her off-course.

Mya Speaks more on celibacy journey:

Mýa previously revealed that her celibacy journey lasted seven years. In an previous interview, she explained how stepping away from dating removed the pressures of societal expectations—marriage, children, or validation through relationships—and allowed her to focus inward.

“Love is beautiful,” Mýa noted, “but I think you must start with yourself.”
She described the process as deeply spiritual, requiring self-awareness and discernment. It became a reset button that gave her clarity and allowed her to redefine love and fulfillment on her own terms.

While celibacy has brought peace and balance, Mýa admitted that her demanding schedule makes relationships challenging. “If I have to be gone 95% of the time … I also can’t show up properly for my significant other,” she said in a recent interview.

Still, the singer hasn’t completely closed the door on love. For now, she finds joy in nurturing her nieces, nephews, and godchildren while staying committed to the personal “assignment” she feels called to fulfill.
