Colin Kaepernick is stepping in to help the family of Demartravion “Trey” Reed as they search for answers about his death. The former NFL star is covering the cost of a second autopsy through his “Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative,” according to civil rights attorney Ben Crump. Crump shared on Friday, September 19, that Reed’s loved ones believe important details are missing and have called for an independent review.

Reed, a 21-year-old student from Grenada, Mississippi, was found on Delta State University’s campus on the morning of September 15. His body was discovered hanging from a tree near the pickleball courts, and officials canceled classes as the community absorbed the news. University police quickly involved local authorities, who later said there was no evidence of foul play.

Two days later, the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Reed’s death a suicide by hanging. Toxicology testing is still in progress and may take several weeks to complete. The Bolivar County Coroner added that their preliminary assessment also showed no signs that Reed had been harmed beforehand. Still, his family has voiced doubts about those conclusions.

Crump said the unanswered questions have reopened painful memories for many. “Trey’s death evoked the collective memory of a community that has suffered a historic wound over many, many years and many, many deaths,” he stated. “Peace will come only by getting to the truth. We thank Colin Kaepernick for supporting this grieving family and the cause of justice and truth.”

Several agencies, including the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, are involved in the case. While officials have not commented publicly, Cleveland Police confirmed that investigation records were sent to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for review. For Reed’s family, the independent autopsy represents their hope for clarity and closure.
