Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner have decided to take their longtime silence on rumors to court. The mother-daughter pair filed a defamation lawsuit against Ray J after he publicly linked their names to serious federal crimes without offering proof. This marks the first time in nearly twenty years of public life that either Kardashian or Jenner has pursued legal action over comments made about them.
The filing accuses Ray J, who gained notoriety with Kardashian from their 2003 sex tape released in 2007, of pushing damaging claims in two separate appearances this year. In the Fox documentary TMZ Presents: United States V. Sean Combs: Inside the Diddy Trial, Ray J remarked, “If you told me that the Kardashians were being charged for racketeering, I might believe it.” The controversy deepened on September 24th when he went live on social media and bragged about the “federal RICO I’m about to drop” on Kardashian and Jenner. He provided no evidence to support those words.
Court documents describe the singer as someone who has not moved on from a relationship that ended more than two decades ago. The filing argues he has carried out “a sustained campaign of harassment and defamation” to draw attention to himself by attacking Kardashian and Jenner. It also insists that “Ray J’s public statements are blatantly false. No such federal investigation exists; no law enforcement agency has initiated any criminal proceedings or investigations related to racketeering charges against Ms. Kardashian or Ms. Jenner; and no credible evidence whatsoever supports these inflammatory allegations.”
Their attorney, Alex Spiro, emphasized that the family does not normally engage with this type of situation. Speaking to People, Spiro said, “They have never brought a defamation claim before nor have they been distracted by noise. But this false and serious allegation left no choice.”
