Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex is in the spotlight again, this time with a nomination for the 2026 Radio Hall of Fame class, highlighting his decades-long influence on the culture.
The Museum of Broadcast Communications unveiled 24 nominees for the upcoming class, highlighting voices that have shaped modern radio. Voting opens April 24 and runs through May 8, with nearly 1,000 industry professionals casting ballots. Each voter can select up to six candidates, while additional inductees will come from the nominating committee.
Flex’s inclusion reflects a legacy built at Hot 97, where he emerged as a dominant force in the 1990s. His explosive delivery, signature bomb drops, and ability to break exclusive records helped define East Coast hip-hop radio. More than a DJ, Flex became a cultural gatekeeper, often debuting music from icons like Jay-Z and Nas.
His “Freestyle” sessions remain a proving ground for rappers, blending lyrical skill with credibility. Over time, Flex expanded beyond radio, building a presence in live events, car culture, and digital media. Still, his core identity remains tied to the booth, where he continues to shape the sound and energy of hip-hop.

Kraig Kitchin, co-chairman of the Radio Hall of Fame, praised the nominees in a statement. “This special group of individuals and programs nominated for induction in 2026 epitomizes the wide spectrum of talented individuals our industry is fortunate to rely on and build large audiences around,” he said.
“My congratulations to each of them. What they’ve accomplished is truly special.”
The top six vote-getters will earn induction into the 2026 class, with additional honorees selected by the committee. For Flex, the nomination marks another milestone in a career that helped define hip-hop radio’s golden era and its modern evolution.
