Rapper Mystikal, whose legal name is Michael Tyler, has moved to withdraw the guilty plea he entered earlier this year in a Louisiana rape case, arguing that he lacked sufficient time to fully consider the consequences of the agreement before admitting guilt.

In a motion filed Friday, Tyler asked a state court to set aside the plea he entered on March 17, just days before he is scheduled to be sentenced. The filing contends that the rapper was under considerable emotional strain when he accepted the deal and felt pressured to make an immediate decision.

Tyler pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of third-degree rape after prosecutors agreed to dismiss more serious allegations, including first-degree rape and false imprisonment. The plea agreement capped his potential sentence at 20 years in prison.

According to the motion, Tyler “did not have sufficient opportunity to fully consider the consequences” of the plea before entering it. The filing further states that he was “under significant emotional distress and felt substantial pressure to make an immediate decision.”

If the court grants the request, the case could return to active litigation and potentially proceed toward trial.

The prosecution stems from Tyler’s 2022 arrest in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. Prosecutors alleged that an acquaintance visiting his Prairieville residence was assaulted and prevented from leaving the home before being sexually assaulted.

Investigators also alleged that Tyler accused the woman of stealing money, physically attacked her, and later transferred funds from her phone to himself. Tyler’s plea resolved those allegations without a trial.

The motion does not directly challenge the underlying accusations. Instead, it focuses on the circumstances surrounding the plea process and whether Tyler knowingly and voluntarily waived his trial rights.

The filing represents the latest development in a case that has drawn significant attention because of Tyler’s prior criminal history. In a separate case, Tyler served six years in prison following a sexual assault conviction and later registered as a sex offender.

The court must now determine whether Tyler has established sufficient grounds to withdraw his plea before sentencing, a ruling that could reshape the trajectory of a case that appeared headed toward final resolution.
