Jay-Z’s three-night residency at Yankee Stadium concluded early Monday after a delayed final performance that began more than three hours behind schedule because of a security incident outside the Bronx venue.
The concert, titled Extra Innings, started shortly after midnight after stadium officials temporarily closed the gates as thousands of people remained outside. According to Roc Nation, large groups of individuals without tickets rushed several entrances, prompting security officials and the New York Police Department to halt admission while they restored order.
After taking the stage, Jay-Z addressed the delay, telling the audience that organizers had prioritized public safety before beginning the performance.
“Let me explain the delay to you guys,” he said. “It was like 10,000 people outside, and we closed all the doors, and somebody rushed the door. They closed the door for you guys’ safety and everyone’s safety outside.”
He continued, “There’s 10,000 people outside; I don’t want to start the music and people get trampled. I’m really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everyone was okay. I appreciate your patience.”
In a statement released after the concert, Roc Nation said that “hundreds of individuals in large groups — who did not have tickets to tonight’s performance — stormed over peaceful ticketholders, and in some cases, breached security.”

The company said officials closed all stadium entrances before reopening them gradually with guidance from the New York Police Department. Roc Nation, Live Nation and Yankee Stadium credited law enforcement and stadium security personnel with placing public safety above all other concerns.
Once the performance began, the evening shifted from frustration to celebration. The concert featured appearances by Rihanna, Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, Usher and Teyana Taylor before concluding with fireworks over Yankee Stadium.
The residency commemorated the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint. Despite the disruption, the three-night engagement underscored Jay-Z’s enduring ability to draw stadium-sized audiences while highlighting the logistical challenges that can accompany events of that scale.
