Kid Cudi says one of hip-hop’s most complicated relationships is finding its footing again. In a post shared Sunday on X, the rapper revealed that he and Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, have quietly resumed speaking after years of public distance. Rather than hinting at new music, Cudi described something far simpler: two people checking in on one another.
“Right now were rebuilding our friendship,” Cudi wrote. “I hit him a week ago to check in on him; today, he hit me to check on me. No work talk. Just seeing how I was doing. It was nice.” When another user asked whether that renewed connection could eventually lead to another collaboration, Cudi answered without much hesitation: “Im sure we will yea.” The exchange suggested their conversations have become personal again before turning creative.
The update arrives after several years in which their disagreement unfolded in full public view. During the opening night of his Rebel Ragers Tour in Phoenix this past April, Cudi closed the show with “Reborn,” the centerpiece of the pair’s 2018 KIDS SEE GHOSTS album. Before the performance, he paused to dedicate the song to Ye, telling the audience, “This one’s for Ye. We gotta sing this loud so Ye can hear you.” It was a brief moment, but one that carried more meaning in hindsight.
From Public Fallout to a Long-Awaited Reconciliation
Their relationship fractured in early 2022 after Ye publicly criticized Cudi over his friendship with Pete Davidson and announced he would no longer appear on Donda. Cudi responded publicly, calling Ye “whack,” and later told Esquire that repairing the friendship would take “a motherfucking miracle.” For a time, reconciliation seemed unlikely as both artists continued along separate paths.
That outlook began to shift months later with a public embrace at a Vultures listening event and the release of “Gun to My Head,” featuring Cudi. Speaking with Zane Lowe in early 2024, Cudi credited Ye’s apology with changing the course of their relationship. “The reason why we became cool again is because he apologized to me, and it was sincere,” he said. “I was just like, ‘Wow, Kanye does not apologize to anybody [or] say sorry to anyone.’”
