Giannis Antetokounmpo still feels like he’s one of the best players in the NBA.
During NBA Media Day, “the Greek Freak” spoke about his standing in the league.
“Yeah. I really do believe that,” he said. “If not the best, I’m one of the best players in the world. I know I’m at my best when I’m locked in, when my body’s right; I really do believe that I can dominate the game. “
“I can impact the game in both ways, offensively and defensively,” he added. “And I think I’ve shown it over the years, even in a year. Last year, that wasn’t one of my best years, probably one of my toughest years. And I was still able to affect the game in some way.”
“I think it’s hard for people who don’t understand. But when you’re up there, top five, top four, top three, two, one, whatever, top 10, the best player is whoever is able to impact the game and help his team go deep in the playoffs and win a championship,” said Antetokounmpo.
For Antetokounmpo, he stated who he believes is the best player today.
“So right now, the best team in the NBA is the New York Knicks,” Antetokounmpo said. Bam Adebayo groaned at his statement “And they have one of the best players, Jalen Brunson.”
Taking the podium, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra shared his main goal for Antetokounmpo.
“We brought him here for a reason. He’s here for a reason,” he said. “We want to establish him in that conversation of best player in the league.”

Antetokounmpo has evolved into one of the most physically dominant and decorated players in NBA history. In 2021, he led Milwaukee to an NBA Championship, putting up a historic 50-point performance in Game 6 to earn Finals MVP honors. He’s won back-to-back regular season MVPs (2019, 2020), the 2020 Defensive Player of the Year award, and a Most Improved Player award (2017). Antetokounmpo is one of only three players in league history, alongside Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon, to win MVP, Finals MVP, and DPOY in a career.
Named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, Antetokounmpo is a multi-time All-NBA First Team selection and perennially recognized as one of the game’s elite two-way superstars.
