Ciara has a new show on Apple Music, Level Up Radio, and is sharing some untold stories from her career.

She opened up about how her 2004 breakout hit, “Goodies,” produced by Lil Jon, was almost given to pop star, Britney Spears. At the time, Ciara was signed to Arista Records but she and other artists were transferred to Jive Records after the label made changes. Due to the label switch, Cici said she had to re-audition for the new label to make her a priority artist or not. Luckily at her showcase, she rocked it!

Ciara said she didn’t find out until later on that behind the scenes, label executives were thinking about giving the record to Brittney Spears. Cici said if she knew at the time, she would have “fought” for the song.

“Not knowing that behind the scenes, there was a conversation about this song being potentially taken from me and given to an artist like Britney Spears, who was on the same roster as me. I learned about the story later, but the crazy thing for me is that if I would’ve known about it then, I would have fought tooth and nail. It was because it’s a record that I actually was a part of creating. I was heavily involved in the writing side of it as well.”

“Goodies” was a major success for Ciara, who was 18 at the time. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and it’s still a party hit today. Ciara also spoke on the music industry being challenging sometimes, which is why she’s happy she has her label.
