Well, duh.
Yet following the election of Barack Obama in 2012, and re-election four years later, the United States of America was lulled to sleep thinking that it had finally fixed one of the biggest problems in this country. A problem that has been rooted in the beginning of US culture that we call racism.
This weekend, Michelle Obama spoke to Tracee Ellis Ross at the United State of Women Summit in Los Angeles where she responded to someone in the crowd that asked her to run for office.
“Well, that’s a whole other story because, that’s not the answer either. And when I hear people say, ‘you run,’ it’s part of the problem. We still didn’t get ‘yes we can’ right. It’s not ‘yes you can,’ it’s ‘yes we can.’ And until we get that right, it doesn’t matter who runs.
She later continued.
“Change starts close to home. So looking for the next person to run. I don’t mean to cut that off, but that’s been our distraction. “We’re going to wait for the next person to save us.’ We thought it was going to be Barack Obama, but he didn’t end racism/ Like, I voted for the black man, and we’re still living in racism.”
The solution she believes is for this country to finally be unified. Maybe it takes the Donald Trump presidency to wake up the country, start talking, and begin to find solutions to some of the biggest issues of this country. Maybe the division will widen. I guess history will tell at the end.
