The Obamas have been trending all day on behalf of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery!
The unveiling of the portraits featuring the former first couple took place today, Monday (February 12th 2018).
Artists Kehinde Wiley painted President Obama’s portrait while Amy Sherald painted Michelle Obama’s.
The former first lady’s immediate response was: “I was blown away by the boldness of Amy’s colors,” while President Obama made sure to throw in a satisfying joke: I tried to negotiate less gray hair, but Kehinde’s artistic integrity would not allow it. ”
Wiley and Sherald are “ first Black artists commissioned to paint a presidential couple for the Smithsonian!”
Huge congratulations to them on the major accomplishment.
