Make sure you take off your Apple Watch before dumping a bucket of ice on your head. The year is 2014 and filled with trending moments. Besides the first edition Apple Watch and the ALS ice bucket challenge, which raised over $115 million, this year’s trends ranged from the ridiculous, unusual, shocking, sad, and comforting. Ellen DeGeneres’ celebrity-filled selfie at the Oscars nearly broke Twitter. To this day, it is still the most tweeted photo with over 3.3 million retweets.

While Ellen owned the twittersphere, Kim Kardashian stripped down for the winter edition cover of PAPER Magazine. Accompanied by nothing more than a soapbox, a skintight, sequined black dress and a bottle of champagne, Kim popped the cork causing an eruption of bubbly, much like a geyser, soaring over her head and landed into a cocktail glass perched upright on her derriere. Just in case that wasn’t enough publicity, Kanye joined Kim on the cover of Vogue.

Pharrell stole the 56th Grammy Awards with his vintage Vivienne Westwood hat-better known as the Freddy Kruger hat. On the red carpet, cameras couldn’t get enough of Pharrell, but the voting committee, as they always do, regained the headlines after awarding Macklemore Best Rap Album over Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.

 

My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album… I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that’s taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it’s proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You’re the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That’s what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys

Five months after the Grammy’s, before she was vying for a seat at the table, Solange fought for elbow room in the elevator. The footage, obtained by TMZ, shows Solange landing more blows on Jay Z than Mayweather in the ring. Shortly after Jay disappeared from the public eye, a music legend rose for one final performance. Michael Jackson’s hologram took the stage at the Billboard Music Awards to perform “Slave to the Rhythm.”

LeBron is home. Yes, the King has returned from beautiful Miami to the equally aesthetically pleasing Cleveland. This year was big for sports. Aside from LeBron’s departure from Miami having lost 4-1 in the finals to the San Antonio Spurs, Michael Sam became the first openly gay NFL player to get drafted. While football culture was improving, so was the level of skill on the field.

The highlight of the year came from New York’s own, Odell Beckham Jr. His nearly impossible touchdown, which happened against the Cowboys and with multiple flags on the field, popularized the one-hand snag. The biggest farewell of the sports year came from “The Captain.” Derek Jeter went from giving gift baskets following “sleepovers,” to receiving gifts from every city. The Yankee legend hung up his glove after 20 years in the MLB.

2014 was full of historic and viral moments and Summer Jam did not disappoint to capitalize on making history. G Unit agreed to return to Summer Jam for the first time since they flopped in 2009. The crew was introduced on the stage by formal rival Nas. This time, G Unit stuck to the hits and had the crowd in a frenzy.

This year was also deeply nostalgic as hip-hop icons from the early 2000s were sharing the stage with newer superstars. New York’s own Nicki Minaj became the first female headliner since Alicia Keys in 2008. She performed hits from her album, The Pinkprint, which released earlier that year. She welcomed Young Money CEO, Lil Wayne, Drake, Soulja Boy, and Young Thug on stage.

Other noteable performances included YG, Ty Dolla $ign, The Roots, Meek Mill, French Montana, A$AP Ferg, DJ Mustard, Wiz Khalifa, Childish Gambino, Action Bronson, Snoop Dogg, and Trey Songz.
