April 24, 2018.
After spending almost five months in prison, Meek Mill was finally released after a Pennsylvania Supreme Court decision ordered his release on bail.
At the time, he was tangled in a battle against Judge Genece E. Brinkley who sent him back to prison despite the recommendation of no jail time from prosecutors. In November 2018, she decided to sentence him to two-to-four years in prison for parole violations.
Those alleged violations being a March 11, 2017 incident where he was arrested at an airport in St. Louis for assault, and August 18, 2017, where NYPD officers arrested him for allegedly poppin’ wheelies in an ATV in New York. Both of those charges were dropped.
After posting bail on April 24, the Philadelphia native made a memorable return to public life as he stepped into a helicopter and arrived at at Wells Fargo Center in time to ring the bell and watch the 76ers win their playoff game against the Miami Heat.
He was still being haunted by an arrest in 2007 on drug and weapons charges. Meek was still paying the price for something that occurred when he was a kid. This time, he knew it was time to make some changes, and help others from becoming another statistic to a broken prison system.
Meek has done a lot since his release almost a year ago. He took a negative, and turned it into multiple positives in a short amount of time.
Months after his release, he appeared on that Summer Jam stage on June 10, 2018, for his first big performance since his release. After arriving in a helicopter, and riding in on an ATV, he began his set with “Dreams & Nightmares” intro as thousands of fans shined the lights from their cell phones in the sky and rapped along to every word.
