Shooting In Texas, 19 Children + Two Adults Killed, Shooter Is Dead

Update 9:14 PM ET – The death toll has risen to 19 kids, and two adults. ABC says Ramos killed his grandmother before entering the school. Reuters reports he acted alone. The outlet also says the children ranged in age from 7 to 10. The motive for the tragic massacre is not immediately known.

A horrible mass shooting happened in Texas at Robb Elementary School. Governor Greg Abbott identified the gunman as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, who lived in the city and entered the school with a handgun and possibly a rifle.

According to news sources, 14 children were killed and one teacher. Gov. Abbott added that the gunman is dead and is believed to have been killed by responding officers on the scene. ABC reports Ramos allegedly shot his grandmother before going into the school and opening fire. It’s not clear what her condition is at this time. 

Abbott spoke on the shooter and told the news, “He shot and killed horrifically, incomprehensibly, 14 students and killed a teacher.” Gov Abbott also said during a news brief that the shooter abandoned his vehicle before entering the school. Abbot said, “It is believed that he [Ramos] abandoned his vehicle then entered into the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde with a handgun, and he may have also had a rifle.” 

The governor also said two responding officers were hit with bullets when they exchanged gunfire with the shooter. Thankfully, they sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Two people from the incident are in critical condition, ABC points out. According to the report, University Health in San Antonio has two patients there, a 66-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl. Uvalde Memorial Hospital said there are 15 students being treated in the ER.  

The elementary school holds 600 students. During the madness, other children were taken to Uvalde High School to be reunited with their parents. Abbott also said, “When parents drop their kids off at school, they have every expectation to know that they’re going to be able to pick their child up when that school day ends. And there are families who are in mourning right now,” Abbott said. “The state of Texas is in mourning with them for the reality that these parents are not going to be able to pick up their children.”
