This past Sunday, Jay- Z, and Beyonce received a lot of backlash for sitting during the National Anthem at the Super Bowl with their daughter Blue Ivy.

The Brooklyn rapper responds to the backlash in a recent discussion with journalism professor Jelani Cobb at Columbia University as part of the Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter Lecture Series. He said “It actually wasn’t. Sorry. It really wasn’t. What happened was, it was not premeditated at all.”

He continued, “We got there and we were sitting and now the show’s about to start and wife is with me… She says to me, ‘I know this feeling right here.’ She’s super nervous [for Lovato] because she performed at the Super Bowl before. I haven’t.”

Many fans took Jay-Z and Beyoncé sitting during the National Anthem is parallel to when  Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the National Anthem in protest of police brutality against unarmed black people.
