Black History Month is here! What better way to celebrate the month then with some of your favorite Black movies and shows! Below is a list of 10 movies and shows you MUST watch before the month is over. You got enough time!
Let’s start with the classics! How about Living Single? The 90’s sitcom followed the livings of four black women, living in Brooklyn. The show was so prominent because it showed a different side of black professionals that was scarcely shown on TV before. The show ran for 6 season. Get your fix! You can stream the show VIA Hulu.
On a more serious note, Fruitvale Station is streaming on Netflix. Make sure you have a box of tissues handy because you’ll sure need them! The movie takes place on New Years Eve. It’s a true story about Oscar Grant lll, an unarmed Black man who was fatally shot by police officers.
Be sure to binge watch Being Mary Jane this BHM, streaming on Netflix. The BET original show gives you a modern “Girlfriends” feel. The show follows the life and career of Mary Jane, played by Gabrielle Union.
What’s a Black History Month watch-session without Black Panther. You can go watch the movies for free, in select theatres.
Queen of Katwe is also streaming on Netflix. The movie follows the life of a Ugandan girl. The movie shows the struggles of poverty, and racism but it also has a happy twist to it. The movie takes a turn when the girl learns how to play chess.
You can grab some popcorn and catch a Netflix original, Dear White People. The movie documents how students of color navigate their way through a ivy league school.
What’s a BHM celebration, without the show Black-Ish? Did you know you can stream all the seasons of Black-Ish on Netflix? The show follows the family Andre Johnson, as they are “black-ish” living in a white suburb area of Los Angeles.
Since we’re on the topic of “ish,” you must get your fix of Grown-Ish. The show is a spin-off of Black-Ish and follows Andre Johnson’s oldest daughter as she goes off to college and attempts to figure out adulthood.
Another classic, Roots, is streaming on Hulu. The remake of the 1977 classic gives a modern feel to the story of Kunta Kinte, but the message is the same.
Last but not least! End your BHM off laughing. Catch up on all the seasons you missed, of Insecure! Issa Rae and the gang is sure to keep you laughing. Also streaming on Hulu with HBO add-on.
