Could you imagine Drake being signed to Akon?

Well, according to Akon, it ALMOST happened! During an interview on Vlad TV, Akon revealed back in 2004/05, he had the chance to sign Drizzy, but passed on it. Akon said listening to Drake made him feel like he was listening to Eminem.

Akon was first introduced to Drake from a well known rapper in Canada, Kardinal Offishall. This was around the time right before “Best I Ever Had” went viral. Then Kardinal told Akon again that he should sign Drake but by this time, there was a bidding war, and the lowest bid for Drizzy at the time was one million and Akon didn’t have it.

Akon said,

“Out of all the artists today, Drake to me, he is worth every single fu**in’ penny, every single penny–that motherfu**er’s genius. He’s revolutionary.”

Even though Akon lost out on Drake, he did sign other amazing artists like TPain, and various Nigerian artists.

In 2009, Drake signed with Young Money and had a distribution deal through Universal label — Universal Republic, Billboard reports. In 2010, he dropped his debut album Thank Me Later, which earned him a Grammy nomination and it saw chart success.

Drake’s last album was his 2018 Scorpion. His sixth studio album, Drake said it’ll be called Certified Lover Boy, is reportedly 90/100 percent finished, and could arrive very soon. We’ll keep you updated!
