The case of Cyntoia Brown received a lot of attention when celebrities like Rihanna and T.I brought it to life. At 16-years-old, the sex trafficking victim was ultimately failed by the legal system when they sentenced her to 51 years behind bars after she allegedly had to defend herself against an attacker.

Recently, a judge ruled that she must complete 51 years before she’s eligible for parole. This created a bigger public outcry because the ruling seemed unjust. There could be hope for the now 30-year-old because Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam is considering her clemency request according to a report.

He has to make a decision within the next few weeks before he leaves office. An online petition has already received 500,000 signatures for Cytonia’s release.
