It has been a long five-year battle for Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, and Marvin Gaye’s estate but it is finally over.
Back in 2013, Gaye’s estate sued Thicke, Williams, and rapper T.I. for copyright infringement, stating that their hit Blurred Lines, sampled Gaye’s 1977 hit song Got To Give It Up. Ultimately Gaye’s estate won the case in 2015, where the court ordered Thicke, and Williams to pay the family $7 million but it was dropped down to $5.3 million.
Unhappy with the verdict, the duo would appeal the case, but the judge upheld the jury’s decision for them to pay the estate. T.I. was cleared of all charges pertaining to this case. On December 6th, the judge also ruled they need,including More Water from Nazareth Publishing need to pay up $2.9 Million in damages. This decision will cause Thicke to pay an additional $1.76 million and for Williams and the publishing house to pay $357,630 as separate rewards.
It is unclear when these payments have to be made to Gaye’s Family.
