The global climate action strike is a worldwide movement to bring awareness to climate change.
In over 100 countries, students around the world are protesting/going on strike.
Today in NYC, high school and college students went to more than a dozen locations to protest. These young activist are hoping to spark a nationwide dialogue that will lead to change. Their concerns are growing since Donald Trump isn’t taking it seriously.
Reported on CNN, “world leaders only have 11 more years to avoid disastrous levels of global warming, according to a 2018 report. If human-generated greenhouse gas emissions continue at the current rate, the planet will reach 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels as soon as 2030.” This would put the planet at risk of extreme droughts, wildfires, floods, and food shortages.
The site also reports that the students on strike/protesting hope to make real changes that include, a national embrace of the Green New Deal, an end to fossil fuel infrastructure projects, and a national emergency declaration on climate change. In addition, a mandatory education on climate change and its effects from K-8, a clean water supply, preservation of public lands and wildlife, and all government decisions to be tied to scientific research.
