It looks like the cleaning raw meat debate is still going!

A new study by the USDA states that washing raw chicken and other meat can increase the risk of illness. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it is hard to completely clean your meat.

The Deputy Under Secretary for Food Safety, Mindy Brashers stated, “Even when consumers think they are effectively cleaning after washing poultry, this study shows that bacteria can easily spread to other surfaces and food.” According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that millions of Americans get sick with foodborne illnesses each year. These illnesses can roughly lead to 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths.

The USDA has recommended that you clean and sanitized all the surfaces before preparing or handling your meat to avoid the risk of cross-contamination and other bacteria causing illnesses.

Are you still going to clean your meat after this new study?
