Akon’s wife, Tomeka Thiam, has filed for divorce from Akon after almost 30 years of marriage.
According to court documents, Thiam filed for divorce just four days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary. The filing cites irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, bringing a close to the couple’s long and often private union.
In her petition, Thiam is requesting joint legal custody of their child, while also seeking primary physical custody. She is asking the court to grant her spousal support, but has made it clear that Akon should not be eligible to receive any financial support from her.
The filing marks a significant personal turn for Akon, who has often balanced his international music career, business ventures, and family life under the spotlight. Despite being a global star, the artist has typically kept much of his marriage and family matters out of public view.
Neither Akon nor Thiam has issued a public statement addressing the divorce filing as of yet.
