Bryson Tiller has opened up about a defining moment early in his career: his decision to sign with RCA Records instead of joining Drake’s OVO Sound.

The 32-year-old singer-songwriter revisited the story on a recent episode of New Rory & Mal, shedding light on a choice that shaped his path in music. Tiller explained that he and Drake had discussed a potential deal before the release of his debut album, Trapsoul, but his team ultimately encouraged him to pursue RCA, citing stability and opportunity.

“I’m being so blunt. Honest. The only reason I didn’t sign [to OVO] is just because bro didn’t hit me back one time,” Tiller said.

He recalled being blindsided when his label flew him to New York City for a meeting, only to inform him that the deal was with RCA. “I get there, and they’re like, ‘Yeah, we’re here to sign with RCA.’ I was pissed about it,” he admitted.

Still, Tiller took a final moment to reach out to Drake, revisiting tracks like 2009’s The Calm. When the rapper didn’t respond, Tiller chose RCA, citing his responsibilities to his young child and family as decisive factors.

Tiller also addressed public speculation about the potential “missed opportunity.” While some argued he could have achieved greater fame under OVO, others suggested Drake’s own career focus might have limited Tiller’s trajectory.

“I’m not really in it to be a superstar,” he said. “I love making people happy with music and giving them moments. Fame has never been my goal.”

He added that he would be content writing for other artists, believing some songs “could be way better with other artists” than remaining solely in his own catalog.

Throughout his career, Tiller has balanced commercial success with a preference for privacy, prioritizing craft over celebrity. His reflections underscore a commitment to music as both personal expression and service to listeners.

By choosing RCA, Tiller says he retained creative control, ensuring that his artistry and personal growth could coexist, and allowing him to define success on his own terms.
