Cardi B recently found herself at the center of a public appeal from Pastor Jamal Bryant, who is leading a nationwide boycott against Target. The rapper, who shared a photo shopping at Target with her children, was gently called out by Bryant on Instagram, urging her to support the movement.
Addressing Cardi B, Bryant wrote, “Dear @iamcardib, Grace and Peace to you! I come to you with a chest full of love.” Acknowledging her busy schedule, he suggested she might not have been aware of the boycott. Highlighting the power of her 163 million followers, he encouraged her to learn more at targetfast.org and join the cause.
The boycott began after Target decided to scale back its diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Activists say this change was driven by political pressure. Bryant highlighted, “There has been a national boycott against @target. They betrayed our community by dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion.” African Americans have spent 12 million dollars a day, and yet they don’t see us as a viable partner.”
He went on to describe the impact of the boycott: “We’ve asked them to invest in black banks, black colleges, and black communities… Our unified movement of churches and grassroots organizations has led to a drop in their stock, a reduction of foot traffic, a reduction of their valuation, and a slashing of the CEO’s salary.”
Bryant acknowledged Cardi B’s Latino heritage and her role as a mother, bridging communities. He appealed for her support, calling the boycott “the most effective boycott in 70 years since the Montgomery bus boycott!”
People reacted to Bryant’s public message with mixed opinions. Some appreciated the respectful tone. Others suggested a private message might have been more effective. As of now, Cardi B has not responded to the pastor’s request.
