Authorities in Bolivar County are investigating the death of 21-year-old De’Martravion “Trey” Reed, a student at Delta State University.
Coroner Randolph Seals Jr. confirmed Reed’s body showed no visible injuries typically linked to assault. He stated that Reed did not suffer broken bones, lacerations, contusions, or trauma consistent with an attack.
“At this time, there is no evidence to suggest the individual was physically attacked before his death,” Seals said.
The body of Reed was discovered on the Delta State University campus on Monday morning. A faculty member found him hanging from a tree around 7 a.m. The university immediately canceled classes, citing the emotional weight of the tragedy.
Word spread rapidly across campus, sparking fear and grief among students. Many expressed unease about safety and transparency as the investigation unfolds. “Because I am a Black student, hearing that this happened to another Black student makes me feel unsafe,” said student Stacie Hoskins.
Another student, Eriana Murphy, described her growing concerns. “I walk to class and I like to walk the track. It would be nice to know what happened.”
Delta State University Police Chief Michael Peeler said investigators have not uncovered evidence of foul play. “Pending further investigation and findings from the medical examiner’s office, we won’t have more information until that part has been done,” Peeler explained.

Members of Reed’s family are demanding clarity and urging the public to stay vigilant. “Please, do your own research on this. Do not let them sweep nothing under the rug. Enough is enough,” his cousin said.
Reed’s relatives released a heartfelt statement remembering his character and spirit. “Trey was our little quiet light. He was sweet, well-mannered, and would give you the world if he could. We ask that you continue to keep our family in your prayers as we continue to navigate through these unforeseen times.”
Reed’s death has renewed conversations about mental health, campus safety, and the need for thorough investigations when tragedies strike communities of color. For many at Delta State, the unanswered questions surrounding his final moments are as heavy as the grief itself.
The investigation remains active, with officials awaiting additional findings from the medical examiner. De’Martravion “Trey” Reed’s family and classmates continue to call for accountability.
