Doechii made headlines at the BET Awards not just for taking home a major win, but for using her time on stage to deliver a powerful political message. While many artists focus on the glitz of awards season, Doechii chose to highlight the reality facing marginalized communities outside the spotlight.

The show, held June 9th at L.A.’s Peacock Theater, came amid heightened tensions across the city as ICE raids shook immigrant neighborhoods. Protests had erupted in response to the sweeps, and emotions were running high—even near the award show venue.

After winning Best Female Hip Hop Artist, Doechii stepped to the mic and didn’t shy away from the moment. She addressed the unrest directly, denouncing the fear tactics being used under Trump’s immigration policies. “There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order,” she said during her speech. “Trump is using military forces to stop a protest, and I want y’all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us.”

Her voice didn’t tremble as she laid out her concerns. “People are being swept up and torn from their families,” she continued, before expanding her message of solidarity: “I feel it’s my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people, for Black people, for Latino, for trans people, for the people in Gaza.”

Later, in her British Vogue cover story, Doechii explained why speaking out in that moment mattered. “I’m not that desensitized, and it felt right,” she said. “I was born to do this.”

The speech quickly went viral, with fans applauding her courage and calling the moment a defining one in her career.
